Start your apartment search early. Rental apartments in New York face a “demand crunch” between August 15 and Sept. 15. Far too many people want an apartment in that narrow window. So you better start your NYC apartment rental search NOW!

We are asked this question a lot. When should you start your search for a September 1 NY apartment rental? The answer is – approximately six weeks before your target date of Sept. 1. That means you should start your search about July 15.

Why so long? There is a “demand crunch” between August 15 and September 15 every year, with most people wanting a September 1 rental. During this crunch, everyone is desperately looking for the right apartment, while apartments are renting like hot cakes, often within hours of being put on the market.

Whereas during most of the year, three weeks of intensive searching is enough, but an early September rental in New York City, you sh0uld give yourself about six weeks.

The Downside: You might have to start paying rent anywhere from two to four weeks earlier than you anticipated in order to get the right apartment.

The Upside: You have time to find the right apartment – without a mountain of pressure on you to make a choice and act instantly.

The Net Result: I have come across far more people who were happy to have the right apartmnt, even if a few days or weeks early. I’ve also come across frantic people who waited too long and then had to settle for the left-overs at inflated prices. Don’t let this be you!
