Back when Manhattan rental apartments were $20 a month, you could be sure that they didn’t come with air conditioning. It hadn’t been invented yet. Keeping cool was never far out of anyone’s mind in those days. So long before the City and the EPA decided that our rivers weren’t safe for swimming, we had young kids from all over the city diving in. Thanks to Gothamist, we bring you this visual record of keeping cool in New York City back in the day.
